Prescriptions

Ordering repeat prescriptions

The easiest ways to order repeat prescriptions are:

  • using your NHS account (through the NHS website or in the NHS App)
  • using the GP online system: SystmOnline

From 3rd February 2025, please be advised the surgery will be unable to process Emergency prescriptions at reception for on the day medication requests (Yellow request Forms).

Unfortunately, this service is being abused, and we are unable to deal with the amount of emergency requests received daily.

If you require emergency medication, please complete an online request at 7.30am for an appointment.

We require 72 working hours to complete all repeat medication requests.

Monday will be ready after 15.00 on Thursday at chemist

Tuesday will be ready after 15.00 on Friday at chemist

Wednesday will be ready after 15.00 on Monday at chemist

Thursday will be ready after 15.00 on Tuesday at chemist

Friday will be ready after 15.00 on Wednesday at chemist

It is the patient’s responsibility to ensure that they have a sufficient supply of repeat medication. Please make sure you check your medication supply regularly, especially when you are planning a holiday.

We accept repeat medication requests in person, post or online. When requesting via post or in person please ensure you ONLY use the computer printed request slip (always attached to your original green prescription). Tick only the medication you require on this white slip.

Please do not order supplies more than 7 days in advance except in the case of holidays. Requests will not be processed early. Telephone requests will not be accepted as they can lead to errors and block the telephone lines. It is possible to request a repeat prescription via your local pharmacist.

Collecting your prescription

Information:

Please give at least 7 working days notice when requesting a repeat prescription. Indicate your requirements on your repeat slip and leave it with reception, or alternatively write to us enclosing a self addressed envelope and we will send it back to you.

Please note any prescriptions received after 1pm will not be processed until the next day, so your prescription may take longer than 3 working days.

You will need to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription from. We call this nominating a pharmacy.

You can change your nominated pharmacy at any time:

  • on the app or website where you order repeat prescriptions
  • at any pharmacy that accepts repeat prescriptions

Take it to the pharmacy you got it from. Do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.

About pharmacists

They can also advise on medicine that you can buy without a prescription.

Find a pharmacy

Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.

Most pharmacies have a private room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff.

Pharmacy first minor ailment scheme

The MK pharmacy first minor ailment scheme is designed to provide an alternative for some patients seeking a GP appointment for certain minor illnesses and conditions. It is available to patients that are registered with a GP practice in Milton Keynes and fit one of the following criteria.

What is MK pharmacy first?

MK pharmacy first provides confidential health advice without needing to book an appointment.

For children in full time education and those in receipt of benefits, the pharmacy can supply recommended medicines free of charge.

Use MK pharmacy first instead of booking a GP appointment and get immediate advice and treatment.

How do patients use MK pharmacy first?

Ask for MK pharmacy first at a local Milton Keynes pharmacy, and talk to the pharmacy team in confidence.

If advice is needed about a child, the child should be taken to the pharmacy for assessment, similar to a GP or nurse appointment.

The pharmacy will recommend appropriate treatment and medication. They may also direct the patient to other services.

Provided the patient/parent has asked to be seen under the scheme, the pharmacy can provide any recommended medication free of charge to children in full time education and those in receipt of benefits.

Are there any restrictions to using MK pharmacy first?

The scheme is only available to children in full time education and those in receipt of benefits; they must also be registered with an MK GP. There is a selected list of conditions and products, the products must be supplied for use within their over the counter license.

Patients that do not fit the scheme criteria can still seek advice and treatment from a pharmacy but any medicines will need to be paid for.

Many MK pharmacies provide this service meaning that you can now get treatment for minor ailments without having to wait for a doctor’s appointment, in turn freeing up their valuable time. If you wish to take over the counter medicine, please inform the pharmacist if you are taking other medications, to ensure it is safe to take with your regular medicine.

The community pharmacist can offer advice and/or treatment for conditions such as:

  • Cough
  • sore throat
  • headache
  • fever
  • nasal congestion
  • hay fever
  • allergies
  • diarrhoea
  • vaginal thrush
  • threadworm
  • athletes foot, insect bites or stings, mouth ulcers, nappy rash, constipation

If symptoms persist you should seek further advice from your GP.

Remember, some pharmacies are open later in the evenings and on Saturdays and Sundays.

Opening hours are available from NHS Direct via their website or you can call the pharmacy.
